16 Oct Richmond Mayor Denounces ‘Dirty Hand of Chevron’

Ed. Note: On Tuesday Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin led a crowd of protestors in denouncing Chevron Corp., which was recently fined $18 billion by a court in Ecuador. The energy giant is now seeking to block plaintiffs in that case from using U.S. courts to enforce the order. In September McLaughlin visited Ecuador, meeting President Rafael Correa and touring villages damaged by environmental pollution from plants handed over to Chevron by American company Texaco after it moved out of the country in 1992. In 2012 a fire at a Chevron oil refinery in Richmond sent thousands to the hospital. A suit in that case is still pending.
