The Contra Costa County Board of Education is seeking applications from youths who are interested in serving as a student member on the board.
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. April 26 for students who will be juniors or seniors for the 2024-25 school year and are enrolled in a public high school in the county.
Student members can make motions that can be acted upon by the rest of the board and cast “preferential votes” that are recorded in meeting minutes but do not affect the outcome of a board vote.
Student members cannot participate in closed session portions of meetings or receive materials related to them because they often pertain to student discipline or other sensitive matters, according to county school officials.
This will be the second year that students are eligible to serve as members of the board. Currently, El Cerrito High School’s Sophia Nguyen and Monte Vista High School’s Daphne Milich serve as the board’s student members.
More information, as well as a copy of the application, can be found at https://bit.ly/3oq9NEK.
