The West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education has named Kim Moses as interim superintendent following the announcement of Superintendent Kenneth Hurst’s retirement at the end of the year, the District announced Tuesday night.

Hurst will retire in December after more than three years of leading the district.

The Board voted unanimously–minus the absence of one trustee–to appoint Moses during a closed session meeting Tuesday at DeJean Middle School in Richmond.

Moses is currently the associate superintendent of business services and her career in education spans 30 years, including 18 years in leadership positions with the district. She is a graduate of Kennedy High School in Richmond.

She has a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis on education and a master’s degree in urban education leadership, both from UC Berkeley, the District said. She earned doctoral degree in educational leadership from East Carolina University in North Carolina.

Moses was a teacher in Oakland for 12 years before moving into administrative roles with the Western Contra Costa Unified School District, where she has served as vice principal at Nystrom Elementary School and what is now Michelle Obama Elementary School, both in Richmond.

Hurst is retiring to spend more time with his family, including his mother-in-law who is facing health challenges, he said.
Moses will officially take on the role of interim superintendent in December. The Board will begin the search for a permanent superintendent later this year.
