CC Pulse Staff Report
Contra Costa Animal Services will join more than 150 animal shelters across the state Saturday holding free adoption events, part of the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day.
The event is hosted by the California Animal Welfare Association, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Many types of pets are up for adoption, not just dogs and cats. The animals are typically vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered. The shelters will also provide details on an animal’s background, behavior, needs and temperament, though information on their history may be limited at times.
Last year, 3,609 animals found homes on the first Adopt-a-Pet Day.

Festivities this year will include free adoptions of shelter pets (though a $25 licensing fee may apply) and a variety of activities through the day.
“Adopting a pet is not just about bringing an animal into your family, it’s about giving them a chance at a life filled with love and care,” CCAS Director Ben Winkleblack said. “We’re excited to invite the community to our Adopt-A-Pet Day event and join us for a day of fun, learning, and of course, finding a forever friend.”

In addition to the free adoptions, participants can watch and/or take part in the following events:
- Adoptions from local rescue groups CalPaws, Contra Costa Humane Society, Rhodie’s Rescue and Hugs for Harry — the last of which specializes in finding homes for senior, special needs and at-risk dogs
- Free dog nail trims by Just Dawgin It Pet Groomers
- Dog-training demonstrations
- Face painting for kids
- An ice cream truck
- Information and demonstrations by local pet vendors Concord Feed, Trupanion Pet Insurance, and dog trainer Avery Luttropp
- Information on how to foster a pet for CCAS
The 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. event will be held at CCAS’s shelter at 4800 Imhoff Place in Martinez. Potential adopters and those interested in fostering an animal can view CCAS’s available pets and find more information at www.ccasd.org, or meet them at the event. And CCAS says they should bring a leash or collar if adopting a dog or a carrier if adopting a cat, according to its standard adoption policies. People can search online for other participating shelters as well.
