Richmond police on Monday evening shot and killed a man who was allegedly threatening to kill people with knives in the city’s Iron Triangle neighborhood, police said.

Officers were sent to a home in the 400 block of First Street at about 5 p.m. to investigate reports of a man armed with knives who was allegedly threatening people inside.

When they got to the home, officers “heard a disturbance inside” and then announced their presence, police said in a news release.

That’s when the suspect, whose name wasn’t immediately available, allegedly came to the door holding at least one knife or other kind of edged weapon, according to police.

Two officers fired their guns but police didn’t say if both officers hit the man or how many times he was shot. He died at the scene, according to police.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the shooting and the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of that investigation, as is typical when a person is killed by law enforcement officers. The names of the officers have not been released.

Police closed off the area around the home to traffic for several hours after the shooting.
