Free physical exams and confidential reproductive health services are now being offered at Contra Costa County’s three community colleges, county public health officials said Wednesday.
Contra Costa Health is offering the services via mobile clinics at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, and Los Medanos College in Pittsburg. The clinics operate at the San Pablo and Pleasant Hill campuses from 1-4:30 p.m. each Wednesday except the second Wednesday of each month, while the Pittsburg clinic is held every Monday from 1-4:30 p.m.
Along with general physicals, the mobile clinics will also offer services such as reproductive education and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, county health officials said. Mobile clinics have already been offered at many high schools in the county and are now expanding to the colleges within the Contra Costa Community College District.
“College is a time of transition and learning. With classwork, jobs, and daily demands, health can fall lower on the list,” county health director Dr. Grant Colfax said in a statement. “By bringing care to campus, we are removing barriers and giving students an easy way to focus on their health.”
County officials said students under 21 can access reproductive care services at the clinics regardless of their insurance status and can also receive physical exams there if they have Medi-Cal, are on the Contra Costa Health Plan, or are uninsured. Students 21 and older who have Medi-Cal, CCHP or are uninsured can access the same services.
