The city of Pinole has appointed Garrett Evans, the former city manager of Pittsburg, as interim city manager.

After Pinole City Council members unanimously appointed Evans on Tuesday to the role, he said he was “very appreciative of the opportunity and looking forward to being of any kind of assistance to you all and staff.”

Evans, who retired in September from his position in Pittsburg, spent around three decades with his former employer. Six and a half of those were as city manager, according to the city. His other roles with the city included working as the director of power and as an economic and redevelopment coordinator.

During his time with Pittsburg, Evans was credited with revitalizing Old Town Pittsburg after the COVID-19 pandemic, and leading or having a hand in projects that generated more than $100 million in revenue, Pittsburg officials in a July press release announcing his retirement. He was replaced as city manager by Darin Gale, who was previously assistant city manager of Brentwood.

Evans will be paid $22,744.36 per month with Pinole, which is an hourly rate of $131.22, according to the agreement.

The appointment comes months after City Manager Kelcey Young resigned to “pursue other career opportunities,” the city said at the time. Police Chief Melissa Klawuhn has been serving as acting city manager.

Evans will assume the role March 9 and serve as interim city manager until council members find a permanent replacement or for up to a year if no replacement is found, the agreement states.

Officials will conduct a nationwide search to find a permanent city manager.
